How to Program Your BMW Key Fob

How to Program Your BMW Key Fob

Losing a key or dealing with a fob that stops working can be frustrating. Whether you just replaced the battery, added a new key, or need to sync your BMW key fob, the good news is you can do it yourself. No special tools, no dealership visit—just a few simple steps to get your BMW key working again.

Getting Your BMW Key Ready

Before programming, make sure you are sitting inside the car with all doors and windows closed. Have all keys you want to program with you, as you will need to sync them at the same time. If you only program one and leave out the others, the unprogrammed keys may no longer work.

Programming a BMW Key Fob From Scratch

If your BMW key fob is not working, resetting it can bring it back to life. Start by inserting your key into the ignition and turning it to position 1. This is the first click, where the dashboard lights turn on. Quickly turn the key back to off and repeat this action five times. Remove the key from the ignition.

Next, take the key and hold the unlock button while pressing the BMW logo button three times. After the third press, release the unlock button. Now, turn the ignition back on to complete the process. Your key should now be programmed and ready to use.

Adding More Keys to Your BMW

If you need to program multiple keys, start with a working key and have the additional keys ready. Sit in the car and make sure all the doors are closed. Put the programmed key into the ignition and turn it to position 1. Wait for the dashboard lights to come on, then turn the key back and remove it.

Now, take the programmed key and hold the unlock button while pressing the BMW logo button three times. Release the unlock button, and you should hear the doors lock and unlock automatically.

For each additional key, repeat the same process. Hold down the unlock button, press the BMW logo button three times, then release the unlock button. Once again, the doors should lock and unlock, confirming the key is now programmed.

What If the BMW Key Fob Still Doesn’t Work?

If your key fob still doesn’t work, the problem might not be the programming but the battery inside the key. BMW key fobs usually use a CR2032 battery, which can be found at most electronics stores.

To replace the battery, open the key fob cover, remove the old battery, and insert a new one. Make sure the positive (+) side is facing the right way. Close the cover, and your BMW key should now function properly.

Need a BMW Key Fob Replacement?

If your key is lost or damaged, a replacement is the best option. You will need to provide your 17-digit VIN number, which can be found on your dashboard, vehicle registration, or insurance documents. With this information, your dealership can order a new BMW key fob programmed to your car.
