Introducing the all-electric 2022 BMW iX

Details about BMW’s proclaimed “new technology flagship,” the 2022 iX, have begun to emerge in preparation for its North American launch in early 2022.

While still in the development phase, BMW has already proven the iX to be a groundbreaking marvel within the electric SUV landscape, reaching new levels of sustainability, endurance and the latest automated driving systems with 5G capability.

The all-wheel-drive standard iX powertrain features BMW’s fifth-generation eDrive technology, containing two electric motors projected to produce 500 horsepower (370 kW), with an estimated 0-100 km/h sprint time of less than five seconds. Fast DC charging up to 200 kW recharges the iX from 10 to 80 per cent battery capacity under 40 minutes, with a full charge targeted at 11 hours.

On a full charge, BMW says the iX should reach a range of 600 kilometres with a 10 minute recharge to the high-voltage battery, increasing the range by more than 120 km.

The design of the iX is distinctive, true to the BMW lineage and a prominent addition to the electric SUV aesthetic. A vertical kidney grille complete with hidden radar functions and camera technology compliment the iX’s slim and sleek headlight unit, flush-fitted door openers and frameless side windows. Meanwhile, the spacious five-person cabin completes the elegantly minimal but technologically capable look of the iX.

A hexagonal steering wheel with a rocker switch for gear selection and BMW’s Curved Display lends to an effortless driving experience with little distraction, while micro-switches and a glass-cut controller enhance the iX’s functionality. With no centre tunnel, the additional legroom created for the front and rear seating further adds to the vehicle’s interior comfort and familiarity.

The 2022 BMW iX is slated to arrive in European markets early next year and arrive in North America in early 2022.
