BMW’s progressive 2020 M8 Competition Coupe needs no introduction in the realm of luxury coupes, especially when it takes to the track with the most powerful production engine in BMW’s M stable.
Equipped with the M TwinPower Turbo 8-cylinder petrol engine, 4.4-litre twin scroll turbochargers, high-pressure injection and Valvetronic, the high-performance BMW M8 gives an output of 617 HP and 553 lb-ft of torque. That takes the coupe from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and from 0 to 200 km/h in 10.6 seconds.
Driver Nicolas Gourdol recently joined up with French magazine MotorSport to take the new M8 Competition on the technical and tight Magny Cours track and pit it against other supercars. Gourdol clocked a rapid time of 1:22.18, placing the M8 higher than other lighter, more agile vehicles such as the Aston Martin Vantage and BMW’s M4 CS.
Unique driver customization behind the wheel of the M8 is encouraged with a selection of drive modes (Road, Sport or Track), changing suspension damping, braking response, steering feedback, and all-wheel-drive system settings, all saveable to the M1 and M2 steering wheel buttons.
Opting between the M8’s Comfort or Sport mode personalities in both steering and braking truly determines the responses needed from the vehicle as each driver approaches the road differently, exploring the M8’s speed range of up to 249 km/h, 304 km/h with the M Driver’s Package.
The subtle, muscular profile of the M8 Coupe certainly adds to the high-performance aesthetic of BMW’s latest track monster. The large coupe sits heavy to the road on 20″ alloy wheels while elegantly crafted interior accents build on this vehicle’s luxurious character from every angle.
Comfortable, heated leather seats with door armrests, carbon-fibre trim on the dash, console and doors paired with the standard 12.3-inch digital instrument primed for navigation, torque and horsepower gauges, tach and speedometer readouts all create a dynamic driving experience. An updated 10.3-inch touchscreen central display with iDrive 7.0 adds to the interior comfort for laps around the track or long-distance road trips inside the spacious cabin.
