The BMW Z4 is back, and it is better than ever

The Z4 is one of the most iconic vehicles for BMW. From the humble beginnings of the Z1 in 1989 until the end of the second-gen Z4 in 2017, the little roadster gained a cult following. When it was announced that the 2-door convertible would come back in 2019 sharing some elements with the upcoming Toyota Supra, some fans were anxious: would this mean that their cherished roadster would lose its exotic car appeal?

After seeing the production version of the 2019 Z4 at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, it is safe to say that those fears have been alleviated. The 2019 BMW Z4 is back, and it is better than ever. And those who want to get their hands on the roadster before everyone else even have their own version, the First Edition.

So what makes this model different from the run-of-the-mill Z4? The most obvious difference is the colour: all Z4 First Editions will sport a Frozen Orange Metallic paint job, an anthracite soft top and a black leather interior. To further differentiate these cars from their less-exclusive brethren, 19-inch wheels sporting exclusive colours and designs will come standard on the car.

But the 2019 Z4 First Edition isn’t made to simply look pretty; under its chiseled hood sits a six-cylinder inline-six. Thanks to a pair of turbochargers, the engine makes 382 horsepower… and sounds like the BMWs of old. A Sport transmission, M Sport brakes and the M Sport differential ensures that all this power gets sent to the ground effectively. Thanks to all this, the 2019 BMW Z4 First Edition gets from 0 to 100 km/h in under 4.6 seconds, making this car faster than the 2017 sDrive35is that came right before it.

If you prefer to wait for a less orange variant of the 2019 Z4 before making your decision, you’ll be happy to know that the full lineup will be announced at the Paris Auto Show in October. However, if you think that the First Edition would make an ideal addition to your garage, we recommend acting fast; this exceptional roadster won’t be available forever.
